What are the Primeurs in Bordeaux?
The Primeurs campaign in Bordeaux, also called En-Primeur, is a way to buy the most sought after wines and vintages while they are still in barrels. This gives customers the opportunity to invest in a certain exclusive wine before it is bottled and offered to the market. This allows customers to guarantee the purchase of a specific wine at a discount on the “future” price. Payment (ex-VAT and delivery costs) and ordering takes place approximately 18 to 24 months before the wine is bottled and delivered.
When does it take place?
Every spring (April) hundreds of wine professionals flock to Bordeaux for the opening of the Primeurs campaign. More than 150 of the most prestigious chateaux welcome journalists, buyers, importers, resellers and other professionals from all over the world to taste the samples taken straight from the barrels of the latest vintage. The chateaux in question then use the feedback obtained on the quality of the vintage to determine the initial prices of their wines. These prices will be released in May/June. At that exact moment their respected “negociants” are given permission to sell En-Primeur wines.
