How to properly understand and read a wine label.

Wine labels come in many different shapes and sizes, with even more variation its content: volume, grape variety, vintage year, alcohol percentage, brand and / or domain name, health regulations, and much more. Some of these are mandatory, but most are optional. 

Mandatory or not, these indications can help you form a nice idea about the style, taste and quality of a wine. We have listed the 3 most important pieces of information on a label that everyone, expert or not, can work with.


This indication immediately gives you a good idea about the style of the wine. Each wine has a separate alcohol percentage, determined by its production process. Around 10-12% it is often a softer and lighter wine. Between 13-15%, you can expect the wine to be warmer and more powerful.

Grape variety

This one is very important because the type of grape variety can give you a good indication of the taste of the wine. Each type of grape has typical characteristics, some more powerful or fruity than others. The most famous grape varieties are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Malbec.

“Bottled at the property”

There are many different wines out there today. So much that it is becoming increasingly difficult to check whether a wine is real and of certain quality. Fortunately, there is a simple solution: if it is indicated on the bottle that the wine is bottled at the winery, it shows that it is indeed an authentic product with a certain quality.
